October, 2016

The 55th All India Wheat and Barley Research Workers’ meet was held at CCSHAU, Hisar during 21 – 24 August, 2016. This was a mega event and about 400 participants from various reputed institutes in the world participated. It served as a forum to discuss and to formulate the plan for increasing wheat and barley production/productivity in view of various emerging and challenging factors encountered in different wheat growing areas of the country.

Maricelis Acevedo – Associate Director for science for Cornell University’s Delivering Genetic Gain in Wheat (DGGW) project also attended this event and gave a presentation – Delivering Genetic Gain in Wheat – a BGRI initiative. Dr. Vijay Paranjape – lead Innovation Advisory at Sathguru presented “Enhancements to Rust Surveillance Tool Box to Enable Interactive Data Analysis”. SAARC tool box – Tablet based Surveillance tool box – In use since 2011. It has enabled data sharing among the Wheat Scientist Community for Rust monitoring. More than 100 Scientists have already been trained on usage of the Tool box. SAARC tool box gives global visibility via Global wheat rust monitoring system (Rust Tracker).
Rust Surveillance Tool Box has now been enhanced to Enable Interactive Data Analysis. Some of the features include:

  • It allows selection of diverse parameters to derive a customized analysis report. Structure allows flexibility to capture multiple diseases on wheat
  • Analyzes and compares disease incidence data of SAARC nations
  • Understands regional frequency of disease incidence
  • Location based rust incidence and severity mapping
  • Compare differences in disease occurrence and severity between various locations
  • Track trends of rust incidence and severity
  • Geographical coverage of on-going surveillance of the three rusts in the SAARC nations annually
